Every Thursday  Te Pouahi come together in the wharenui to celebrate our tamariki's  success.  We share our learningi, we have waiata and we enjoy each others company.  Tino pai Rehara and Louis  for your awesome pukumahi in reading and writing.

Our tamariki have been working really hard with their sight word bags. Today Louis and Tristin

completed their word bags and earned their ice cream.  Lucy and Kingi are so close to knowing all their words too. I have a feeling they will get an ice cream tomorrow!

Wa whanau

At the start of every year our new tuakana sit on te pae. This is a privilege and many tamariki look forward to this role when they get older. Each year tamariki begin with paper and within a few months they can speak with out their paper.  We also have our morning karakia to start our day off in a positive way.

Ko Tane Mahuta tenei.  - This is Tane Mahuta  (Atua of the forest).
Ko Tawhirimatea tenei - This is Tawhirimatea  (Atua of the wind).
Ko Tangaroa tenei - This is Tangaroa (Atua of the sea). - This is Tumatauenga (Atua of war)
Ko Tumatauenga tenei  - This is Tumatauenga (Atua of war)
Ko Rongomatane raua ko Haumietiketike enei  This is Rongomatane ( Atua of the kumara and cultivated food)  and Haumietiketike (Atua of wild or uncultivated foods).
Ko Ruaumoko tenei - This is Ruaumoko  (Atua of earthquakes, volcanoes and seasons
Hui e taiki e - (a saying often used in speeches. It is used to signal that the group is united and ready to progress the purpose of them coming together).

Auto pilot

Every morning we start off with auto pilot. This is a rote learning programme I use to increase word knowledge in te reo Maori. We have been running this programme for a term now and we are getting really good at it. Today Tessa had a go at  running our auto pilot session. She did really well. Beautiful pronunciation Tessa!

Over the next two weeks, we will working on rules and routines in our akomanga.

Swimming starts next week and so does reading.

A brand new year!

Welcome back to kura whanau!  I hope you had a fantastic holiday.  My whanau and I had a lovely trip away. We spent plenty of time with friends and whanau in Tai tokerau.  We went all the way to Cape Reinga and surfed the dunes of Te Paki!   I am all recharged and ready to tackle 2013.  We have a new class and it feels wonderful to have Te Pouahi back together with a whare.  I look forward to seeing you all soon.  Mauri ora.  Whaea Carly

We have loved having Matua Tom with us. He has such a wonderful way with tamariki. We wish him well with his teaching qualification.

Battle of Agincourt

On Friday we re-enacted the battle of Agincourt. It was so fun!

Today we had a powhiri to welcome our new friend Cash. His Mum, Nana and big sister came along to tautoko.
We now have 15 tamariki in the Potiki class.

Mahi pangarau

In pangarau our group have been imaging. Today Lucy had a go at counting on! She did so well! Anahera has been counting on for a while- so today we decided to try some bigger numbers. Tino pai korua!

Taiaha with Matua Pryor

This term we have started taiaha practice as part of hakinakina. This is wonderful practice for our coordination and sense of direction. Matua Pryor volunteers his time, we are so lucky!

Welcome to our new friend Louis! Last Thursday we had a powhiri for Louis and his whanau. Louis' Dad played the guitar and we shared some lovely kai. Louis loves the big adventure and spiderman. Louis is so clever, he can already write his name and identify numbers up to 5! Tino pai e tama!
